Chapter 0068: A Beauty Wants to Be My Girlfriend?
“Damn!”
He’d been so focused on dealing with Blade that he’d forgotten about the dozens of ruthless assassins—each of them more formidable than your average special forces soldier. Zhang Xiaofan could dodge bullets, but he didn’t have the guts to take them head-on; even if it wouldn’t kill him, the wounds would be far from trivial.
A series of rapid gunshots rang out, and then, in a flurry of steel, Feng Qingyang’s sword flashed at an almost inhuman speed. Sparks burst with each parry, and to Zhang Xiaofan’s astonishment, every single bullet was deflected by the master’s blade.
The Shadowless Sword Technique?
Zhang Xiaofan recognized it instantly—he hadn’t expected Feng Qingyang to be versed in this lost art. Given his age and the years spent within Dragon Soul, taking part in countless missions, it was not so surprising after all that he’d mastered such a technique.
Feng Qingyang’s sword was no ordinary weapon. Even after blocking so many bullets, it remained pristine and unscathed.
With Feng Qingyang’s help, Zhang Xiaofan regained his composure. He darted forward like a phantom, each jab striking a vital point, felling his enemies one by one. These men were strong, but they were no match for a martial cultivator like him.
Within minutes, the two subdued the assassins—some dead, others wounded. Those who survived bit down on something hidden in their mouths and immediately died, blood spewing from their lips.
Clearly, these were suicide soldiers. Zhang Xiaofan knew there was no hope of extracting any useful information now. He’d wanted to uncover the power behind them, but that hope was dashed.
“Old Feng, thank you. If not for you, I’d be riddled with holes by now.” With the enemies dispatched, Zhang Xiaofan offered sincere thanks.
“You flatter me, young friend. If not for you, I’d have been killed by that master. His strength was truly formidable—in Dragon Soul, only members of the Heavenly Division could match him, I suspect.”
“Agreed. He was incredibly strong,” Zhang Xiaofan nodded.
“But who were these people…” Feng Qingyang muttered darkly. People like this were a cancer to society.
“Someone will look into it. First the Poisonhand Medicine King, now these men. Don’t worry—they won’t get away with this so easily,” Zhang Xiaofan replied. Dragon Soul existed precisely to handle such threats.
Feng Qingyang nodded and checked the bodies, finding nothing to identify them.
“Huh? Is this a Minor Spirit Pill?”
Zhang Xiaofan found a jade vial on Blade’s body. He uncorked it and sensed a potent spiritual energy. Inside were Minor Spirit Pills.
The Minor Spirit Pill was a rare and precious medicine. Back on Mount Kunlun, the old master of Qingyun had once managed to concoct a batch. The ingredients were extremely hard to find, and for martial cultivators—especially those at the Awakening Realm—this pill greatly increased the odds of a breakthrough.
For example, moving from the peak of early Awakening to mid-stage, this pill could raise the success rate by at least fifty percent.
Happily, he corked the bottle and slipped it into his pocket. At least this mission hadn’t been for nothing.
At that moment, the police arrived on the third floor. Looking at the more than twenty corpses, they were stunned. Two people had defeated so many heavily armed criminals?
No wonder—they truly were from that place.
“Are you all right?” Chen Guoping approached and asked.
“We’re fine. The mission’s complete. There’s another body in a room on the second floor—don’t forget it,” Zhang Xiaofan said.
As for that man’s strength, Zhang Xiaofan said nothing. The deed was done; there was no point. He actually owed a debt of gratitude to that fool Liu Zifeng for this mission.
If not for Liu Zifeng, Zhang Xiaofan wouldn’t have been able to kill Leng Lishang so easily. Had he failed, he might not have survived the night. Two Awakening Realm opponents were beyond his ability to handle.
Even taking down Blade was only possible with Feng Qingyang’s help.
“Truly, we owe it all to you,” Chen Guoping said. Though Zhang Xiaofan downplayed the danger, Chen Guoping knew how formidable the enemies had been. Without Zhang Xiaofan, the team would never have completed this mission.
“It was nothing,” Zhang Xiaofan replied quietly. “If there’s nothing else, I’ll be going now.”
With the mission finished, Zhang Xiaofan saw no reason to linger. Better to return to President Lin’s villa and get some rest.
“All right,” Chen Guoping said.
Zhang Xiaofan nodded and left.
“I’ll be off as well,” Feng Qingyang bade farewell and followed Zhang Xiaofan.
Outside the bar, Feng Qingyang called after him. “Young friend, why did you suddenly leave school?”
“I was assigned a special mission. Nothing I could do. I’d rather be enjoying campus life myself,” Zhang Xiaofan replied.
“I see.” Feng Qingyang nodded in understanding, then said, “Bai Qi and Zhu Jianlong have both been specially recruited. There’s a gathering tomorrow night. Will you come?”
Zhang Xiaofan wasn’t surprised—he’d already informed his superiors. Specially recruiting two students was nothing, especially since Bai Qi had a solid foundation and Zhu Jianlong was hot-blooded and promising.
“I’ll see if I have time. Send me the time and place. If I’m free, I’ll drop by,” Zhang Xiaofan said. After all, Bai Qi did call him ‘big brother.’
“Eight o’clock tomorrow night, at the Ocean Sky Hotel.”
“All right.” Zhang Xiaofan nodded. The Ocean Sky Hotel was no stranger to him—he’d been there before. It was the Ye family’s territory.
“Old Feng, I’ll be off now,” he said, opening the Cayenne’s door.
“Go ahead,” Feng Qingyang replied, heading to his own car nearby.
Zhang Xiaofan got in, buckled his seatbelt, and was about to start the car when the passenger door opened. Chen Yuanyuan, eyes red from crying, slid into the seat beside him.
“Take me home,” she said irritably. She’d cried in the bar for a while and only felt a little better. She reasoned that Zhang Xiaofan was concerned about her safety, so she waited for him here.
“Hey, I’m not your driver, you know,” Zhang Xiaofan said.
“Are you a man or not? Why so much fuss about taking me home?” Chen Yuanyuan snapped. Her mood was already foul—was it so much to ask for a ride?
Zhang Xiaofan was caught off guard. What did being a man have to do with it? If anything needed proving, it should be done in bed, he thought to himself.
Still, seeing her red, swollen eyes, she’d clearly cried hard. Was it really necessary? He’d only scolded her a bit. Was she that fragile?
Fine, fine, he’d take her home.
“So, beautiful, where do you live? Anyone waiting at home?” he joked.
“Is that any of your business?” Chen Yuanyuan rolled her eyes. “Blue Sky Gardens. Just drive.”
“Blue Sky Gardens?” Zhang Xiaofan was surprised. This beautiful police officer lived there? When he’d lived there, he’d never run into her.
He wondered how Aunt Yun and Wang Yuqing were doing these days. After all, Aunt Yun’s place was the first home he’d had in Jinghai. He decided he’d drop by to visit.
“Sit tight, we’re off,” Zhang Xiaofan said softly, starting the engine and pulling onto the street.
“Do you have a girlfriend?” Chen Yuanyuan suddenly asked, blushing.
Zhang Xiaofan was startled. Why was she asking that? Did she have her eye on him? He grinned, “Why, do you want to be my girlfriend?”
“You’ve hugged me, kissed me, and seen me naked—shouldn’t you take responsibility?” Chen Yuanyuan replied. She was a rather traditional girl. Even if it was all due to the mission, those intimate moments had left Zhang Xiaofan’s image imprinted on her heart.
Besides, he was handsome, capable—apart from being a bit of a rogue, she didn’t mind him.
After this mission, she realized his roguishness was just a front. When he got serious, he was commanding and charismatic.
So she’d already decided: if he had no girlfriend, she’d be his.
“Take responsibility? Miss Chen, what age do you think we’re in?” Zhang Xiaofan replied. “People have relationships now without any responsibility. I only kissed and hugged you—and that was for the job! Besides, seeing you naked was for medical treatment. Don’t try to pin this on me.”
“You—! I offer to be your girlfriend, and you’re not interested?” Chen Yuanyuan huffed. Countless rich boys had chased her, but this guy—she took the initiative and he acted all dismissive. Was she really that undesirable?
“That’s not it. Look, I’m not even twenty yet—don’t you think it’s a bit early for me to be dating?” Zhang Xiaofan said.
“Then why do you act like such a lech?” Chen Yuanyuan shot back.
“Age has nothing to do with that. Even middle schoolers know how to flirt,” Zhang Xiaofan replied.
“I’m asking if you’re willing or not. If you think I’m too old, I’ll wait two years,” Chen Yuanyuan said.
“Wait two years? By then you’ll be old—I might not be interested,” Zhang Xiaofan teased.
“You—you—you…” Chen Yuanyuan was left speechless.
“Do you already like someone?” she blurted out, flustered as any young woman.
“I like lots of people—the campus belle, the gorgeous CEO, and you, of course. Beautiful policewoman, stunning figure, captivating face,” Zhang Xiaofan grinned.
“You shameless flirt!” Chen Yuanyuan pouted.
“What kind of carrot is a ‘shameless flirt’? I’ve never seen that variety,” Zhang Xiaofan quipped.
“Go to hell!” Chen Yuanyuan was on the verge of exploding, reverting to her cold, proud policewoman self.
Did he realize how much inner struggle this had taken? Swallowing her pride, confessing to him—and this little scoundrel kept dodging and playing dumb.
“Actually, you’re wonderful and very beautiful. But I’m not right for you,” Zhang Xiaofan said after a pause, his expression serious. “We’re from different worlds. I hope you understand—you should live your own life.”
Chen Yuanyuan was stunned. Sensing the aura around him, she found him even more attractive. When he got serious, the effect was magnetic—an unspoken feeling that tugged at her heart.
She never once thought of him as just eighteen—those star-like eyes held untold stories.
