Chapter 100: A Heart of Compassion
Zhang Xiaofan spoke softly, yet everyone present heard him clearly. The members of Huichuntang immediately turned cold. This man with the black mole was the best traditional Chinese medicine doctor there, second only to the renowned divine physician Gao. Zhang Xiaofan’s words were undeniably an affront to Huichuntang’s reputation and had sparked widespread anger.
“Young man, you can mess up your meals, but you can’t just say whatever you want!” the black-mole man said sternly.
“Brother Wang, why waste words on this brat? He dares to cause trouble in our Huichuntang; let’s teach him a proper lesson today!” a hot-tempered young doctor exclaimed.
“I think this kid is sick—delusional, in fact…”
Hearing these words, Zhang Xiaofan felt no anger at all. With his elevated state of mind, he thought it was not worth losing his temper over such trivial matters.
Yet, he couldn’t just let things slide either.
At that moment, a few people hurriedly rushed in through the main door. One of them carried someone on his back who appeared to have fainted, his face pale as death.
“Doctor Wang, please save us!” the middle-aged man carrying the boy was sweating profusely, gasping for breath, his expression desperate.
“Hey, why aren’t you lining up?” someone nearby grumbled.
“Sorry, sorry, it’s just my son’s life is hanging by a thread. Please, everyone, make an exception,” the man quickly apologized, then looked toward the black-mole man. “Doctor Wang, my son took the medicine you prescribed today and suddenly collapsed unconscious. Please, you must take a look… He’s my only child. Nothing must happen to him.”
“Yes, Doctor Wang, we managed to gather fifty thousand yuan for you, but now my son is like this. Please, take a look at him. If you need more money, we’ll find a way to pay,” said a middle-aged woman dressed plainly—clearly the man’s wife.
The man seemed honest and simple, and judging by their attire, their family was modest at best.
“Hmm? What are you implying? That I prescribed the wrong medicine? Are you questioning my medical skills?” Dr. Tang suddenly lifted his head, his face filled with anger. “That fifty thousand yuan you paid barely covers the medicine. I’ve been merciful; otherwise, my consultation fee alone would cost you ten to twenty thousand.”
Watching the anxious couple, Zhang Xiaofan sympathized with their plight. It was already difficult enough to afford treatment, but if their savings were all spent and the illness remained, or worse, their son died, it would be a nightmare for them.
At that moment, Zhang Xiaofan had no desire to argue with the black-mole man. He simply wanted to help the couple. Besides, the boy carried on the man’s back was about his own age.
This was Zhang Xiaofan’s compassion.
Stepping forward, he looked at the middle-aged man and spoke softly, “Perhaps I can help. Show me the previous prescription.”
“You… you can really help?” The man doubted him, judging by Zhang Xiaofan’s youth and appearance, which hardly looked like those of a doctor.
“Heh, I won’t charge you a single cent. I’ve studied some medicine and might be able to help. Why not give it a try?” Zhang Xiaofan replied.
“All right.” The man nodded and turned to his wife. “Honey, give the prescription to the young master.”
The woman immediately took a piece of paper from her pocket and handed it to Zhang Xiaofan.
The black-mole man watched all this with a sneer. “Let’s see how you embarrass yourself trying to show off.”
Taking the prescription, Zhang Xiaofan examined it briefly, then placed his hand on the boy’s wrist. His expression quickly darkened.
The boy was originally suffering from heart failure, causing insufficient blood flow and unconsciousness. However, this case was different from typical heart failure because the heart itself showed no problems.
The condition only worsened with poor sleep. The boy was likely recently finished with his college entrance exams; fatigue and psychological pressure had contributed to the illness.
Such a condition was almost impossible for ordinary people to detect, even by pulse-taking, unless one possessed significant skill.
Looking at the prescription the black-mole man had given, Zhang Xiaofan’s anger flared. The boy’s condition could have improved with rest in a few days, but the doctor had prescribed an extremely tonifying medicine.
It was like feeding a starving person a feast after days without food—dangerous, not healing!
Such incompetence! And yet he dared to call himself a divine doctor?
Zhang Xiaofan turned to the black-mole man, fury blazing in his eyes, shouting, “Incompetent quack, and you call yourself a divine doctor? I don’t think you’re even fit to be a veterinarian! For a condition that only needed a few days’ rest, or perhaps wasn’t even a real illness, you prescribed this heavy tonic? Now the heart’s blood is congested; it’s on the verge of stopping blood circulation. Life is in danger. If I were the patient’s family, I’d want to take your life!”
His words were sharp and precise, making the black-mole man’s face grow even more unpleasant. The other doctors at Huichuntang were equally stunned and outraged; they could not accept Zhang Xiaofan’s condemnation.
While they were still shocked and ready to retaliate, Zhang Xiaofan’s gaze landed on the banners hanging on the wall, emblazoned with phrases like “Miraculous Hands Reviving Spring” and “Divine Physician Serving the People.” His anger surged even more.
With no hesitation, he strode forward and tore the banners down, ripping them to shreds and stamping them underfoot.
Everyone was stunned. This young man had just torn apart Huichuntang’s most treasured banners!
The black-mole man looked at Zhang Xiaofan in disbelief. These banners represented decades of accumulated honor!
Usually, even minor mistakes would earn a scolding from the master. But this guy… this guy tore them all down and trampled them underfoot?
Was he deliberately humiliating Huichuntang’s dignity?
Was he here just to stir trouble?
Where did this kid get such audacity?
Huichuntang, though just a medical clinic, wielded immense influence in Jinghai, as many powerful and wealthy people sought treatment there.
This kid must be mad!
“Damn it!” the black-mole man finally burst out, cursing loudly. “Seize this bastard! Beat him until he’s crippled!”
His shout roused the stunned disciples of Huichuntang. One by one, they glared fiercely and charged at Zhang Xiaofan.
“You little brat! You tore our banners! I swear I’ll chop off your hand!” yelled one young disciple in a frenzy.
“Give me back the banners!” shouted a stout disciple, brandishing a vegetable cleaver as he swung at Zhang Xiaofan.
...
Although Zhang Xiaofan was wounded, he was no pushover for these minor figures. A cold gleam flashed in his eyes. Since they didn’t know how to behave, he would teach them a lesson.
“What are you trying to do? I’m Lin Siyu of the Lin Corporation. I dare any of you to make a move!” At that moment, Lin Siyu suddenly shouted, stepping forward with arms spread to shield Zhang Xiaofan.
To her, Zhang Xiaofan was already badly injured and should not fight back.
“Hmph. President Lin, I respect you, but he tore our banners. No matter what, we won’t let him go today!” the black-mole man growled.
“Heh, you incompetent quack who nearly killed someone! If not for you, who else would I tear the banners for? Come on, bring it on! Let’s see if your poor medical skills can at least hold up in a fight,” Zhang Xiaofan sneered at them disdainfully.
“You’re the quack! This patient’s condition was terminal. It’s normal my prescription couldn’t save him. If you have the skill, try treating him yourself!” the black-mole man shouted.
“Heh, what if I cure him?” Zhang Xiaofan smirked coldly.
“If you cure him, I’ll let you do whatever you want. But you’re just a kid—there’s no way you can heal him. Such nonsense,” the black-mole man roared.
“Fine, then you can just wait to eat dirt!” Zhang Xiaofan sneered, then walked to the middle-aged man. “Put your son down.”
“Uh… okay.” The man hesitated but seeing Zhang Xiaofan’s confident demeanor, thought, if this young man could really cure his son, it would be a miracle.
It was worth a try.
Watching Zhang Xiaofan’s confident display, the black-mole man and the other Huichuntang disciples sneered. “Keep pretending, kid. If you can’t heal him, we’ll make sure to finish you off.”
