Chapter 119: The Giant Python
There was absolutely a nest of snakes in there—and every kind of snake imaginable!
There were green bamboo vipers, cobras rearing their heads, and rattlesnakes whose tail tips trembled incessantly.
Although they were different species, they had one thing in common: they were all snakes!
Well, actually, their bodies were simply far too enormous. They had almost ceased to qualify as snakes and had become giant pythons instead!
The smallest snake Chen Bo saw was slightly thicker than his arm, while the largest was even thicker than his waist! As for their length, he could not tell. They were all tangled together, making it impossible to determine just how long their bodies truly were.
Chen Bo could not help swallowing. Every hair on his body stood on end. In this life, he was almost unafraid of any animal—except snakes, centipedes, scorpions, and spiders. Snakes in particular!
When Chen Bo was young, a snake had bitten him at the root of his thigh. Fortunately, the bite had landed just a little to the side and had not affected his future happiness.
Luckily, the snake that had bitten him had not been venomous. It had merely been an ordinary flower snake.
Back then, Chen Bo had been bitten because he had sneaked out to play. He had been too young to understand the danger and too afraid to tell his parents, so he had crushed some grass that stopped bleeding and applied it to the wound himself.
Fortunately, there had been no parasites or anything of the sort, and he had narrowly managed to preserve his precious little brother.
From that day onward, Chen Bo had developed a faint fear of snakes—those cold, slippery creatures. The psychological scars of childhood were not so easily erased.
Looking at the densely packed mass of snakes, Chen Bo felt utterly devastated.
He regretted coming here in the first place. Why had he been so intent on courting death? If one did not seek trouble, one would not die!
Chen Bo wanted to leave quietly. The passageways here extended in every direction; this was hardly the only route available.
But just as he was about to avert his gaze, he suddenly saw a giant python as thick as a large barrel rear its body upright.
Chen Bo was stunned. The mere section of its body that had risen stood as high as a building! He did not dare imagine how long the entire creature was.
Suddenly, the python’s golden eyes turned toward him. Although the light was extremely dim, Chen Bo could still see the icy chill in its vertical pupils.
Damn it! I’ve been spotted!!!
Chen Bo’s expression changed drastically. He had no idea how the python had discovered him. In theory, snakes relied on scent molecules to locate their prey, but with the stench in this place, they should not have been able to smell him at all!
The fact that none of the other snakes had noticed him proved as much. So how had this giant python detected him?!
Chen Bo felt as though his brain were no longer functioning properly. Then, in an instant, he saw the scales beside the python’s eye flash with reflected light.
Reflected light? There was no light here! How could anything reflect light? Could it be glowing on its own? Impossible!
Wait!!
Chen Bo abruptly looked down at the oil lamp in his hand.
Light! Light! It had to be the flame from this oil lamp. The python must have seen it by accident!
Damn it! Chen Bo cursed inwardly and ran backward without giving himself time to think.
He had taken only a few steps when a thunderous roar came from behind him.
“Roar!!!”
What the hell? How could a snake roar like that? Did they not usually go “ssss”?
The thought had barely entered his mind when Chen Bo heard wave after wave of overwhelming hissing. At first listen, it sounded as though thousands of giant snakes were already pursuing him.
Just as Chen Bo was about to turn into another cavern, the sound of something slicing through the air suddenly came from behind!
Almost purely by instinct, Chen Bo swung his sword. In the faint light, he saw a long object cleaved into two by the blade before losing its momentum and crashing to the ground.
It was a snake—and damn it, it was a snake that could leap!
That alone was not particularly strange. But a snake that could leap more than a dozen meters, perhaps even farther, was extremely unusual. At least, Chen Bo had never seen one before.
On Earth, some snakes could use the air—or whatever strange force it was—to leap from one tree to another. But the trees were never very far apart. Otherwise, the snake would either fall to its death or suffer a truly miserable fate.
Chen Bo had no idea what this species was called, nor did he know how many of them there were. If their numbers were high, he would have to play a game of Fruit Ninja—no, Snake Ninja.
Chen Bo had no desire to play such an exciting and nerve-racking game. These snakes were just like the insects he had encountered earlier. Individually, they might not amount to much, but if they attacked together, then forget about a mere Body-Tempering cultivator like Chen Bo—even an Innate expert would be finished!
Chen Bo seemed to have thought through all these matters, yet in reality less than two seconds had passed. He could already hear the snakes sliding across the ground behind him. The sound was horrifying.
With a sharp turn, Chen Bo slipped into another cavern, hoping to use the complicated terrain to shake off the mass of elongated creatures pursuing him.
However, he had not gone very far before the scene before him made his face turn green.
His turn had taken him straight behind the snake swarm!
Several thousand giant snakes crawled and writhed ahead of him. At the very center was the giant python as thick as a large barrel—the one he had seen earlier.
It occupied the middle of the swarm, four or five hundred meters away from Chen Bo. Not a single snake dared approach within five meters of it. There was no need to say more; this creature was clearly the king of the snakes.
Although Chen Bo moved in complete silence, the swarm was not blind. The moment he appeared behind them, hundreds of giant snakes fixed their eyes on him.
They had no idea why this human had suddenly appeared behind them, but that did not prevent them from wanting to kill him.
Actually, these snakes had no desire to provoke Chen Bo. But their “boss” had just given the order to eliminate this human, and as underlings, they had no choice but to obey.
Otherwise, if they offended their “boss,” they would become a pile of snake droppings in the blink of an eye. Thinking of this, the not particularly intelligent snakes pursued Chen Bo with even greater enthusiasm.
As for their so-called “boss,” there was no need to guess. It was the giant python.
Chen Bo was certain that the python possessed intelligence no lower than that of a human. Yet he could not sense even the slightest trace of a primal beast’s aura from it. What the hell was going on?
At that moment, the system—which had remained silent for a long time—suddenly spoke.
“Host, this is an instance space, an area independent of the Savage Continent. You may regard it as a small world. The things within it have no connection whatsoever to the Savage Continent.”
Only then did Chen Bo understand. No wonder none of these snakes were primal beasts—and no wonder he could not recognize a single character in the writing inside the Gravity Corridor!
