Chapter 116: Another Fragment Forgotten
Just discharged from the hospital and already injured again—last time Chu Dong was helped out, but this time he was carried out on a stretcher. Tan Xue had gathered several security guards at the company to get a stretcher, and she held an umbrella on the side. Uncle Li was still driving, and it was the same RV.
As soon as they reached the hospital entrance, Tan Xue saw someone she was reluctant to encounter.
Luo Feiyu stood at the hospital door, dressed in denim and carrying a small bag.
Tan Xue was taken aback, recalling the condition she had set with the deputy director for Luo Feiyu to take care of Chu Dong. She pinched her thigh—was this just asking for trouble? Originally, it was meant to vent her anger, but now the person had actually come.
“You should go back. Even if my family is short-handed, there’s no need for you to meddle. Please leave as you came. Thank you for your cooperation,” Tan Xue said with a formal bow.
“I’m sorry, I was sent here on orders. If you don’t need me, please tell our director yourself,” Luo Feiyu replied calmly, stepping aside and tossing the ball back to Tan Xue.
“If you want to come, then follow me. Who’s afraid of whom?” Seeing that Luo Feiyu was serious, Tan Xue had no choice but to leave a remark and get into the car.
Luo Feiyu said nothing more and followed her onto the vehicle.
Tan Xue had arranged for the family’s private doctor to stay permanently at the rented villa, so managing Chu Dong’s dressing changes wouldn’t be chaotic. Once they arrived, she settled Chu Dong down and pointed at the room he had stayed in before. “You can stay in that room. I won’t charge you rent during this period.”
Luo Feiyu completely ignored her words, carrying her bag inside. Soon, she changed into a white coat, and with a nurse’s cap, she looked almost like a nurse.
“Oh, quite professional,” Tan Xue laughed upon seeing Luo Feiyu’s outfit as she came out of her own room. “Let me see, did you swipe that from the hospital?”
“Is it fun?” Luo Feiyu smiled at Tan Xue and twirled around.
“Definitely fun,” Tan Xue applauded, nearly bursting into laughter.
“Kid, I don’t have time to play with you.” Luo Feiyu sat down. “I’m just here on orders to care for the patient. Also, I feel guilty about Chu Dong’s injury—nothing else. I’m not here to compete for a man. Not because he’s not outstanding, but I never imagined anything with him. So rest assured, he’s yours. None of my business. Understand?”
“Really?” Tan Xue tilted her head, staring at Luo Feiyu as if she could see through her.
“Of course. I don’t see what’s so great about him—only you treat him like a treasure,” Luo Feiyu stood up. “From today, I’m taking over his room.”
Chu Dong was utterly confused. He remembered getting off the ship onto the lifeboat, safely escorting Tan Xue and the others to shore. He saw Tan Xue and the others reach the shore himself, no doubt about it. But he didn’t recall being so badly injured—why did his whole body hurt so much?
The room looked familiar—wasn’t this Tan Xue’s room? Had he been sleepwalking? That couldn’t be. Even if he had such a problem, how could he have managed to walk here with such serious injuries? Had he somehow summoned all his strength while sleepwalking?
Lost in these thoughts, Luo Feiyu entered. At first, he didn’t recognize her, just sensing familiarity. But a closer look told him—wasn’t this the policewoman who had beaten him up before? Oh no, was he caught red-handed?
He wanted to speak but found it difficult. Someone had even wrapped his mouth, leaving only his eyes to express what he meant. He blinked furiously.
“What’s wrong? Is the pain unbearable?” Luo Feiyu didn’t know what he wanted and asked, “If it hurts, blink once; if not, blink twice.”
Chu Dong blinked twice, but realizing he was indeed in pain, blinked once more.
“So, does it hurt or not?” Luo Feiyu, though dressed as if she knew nursing, actually didn’t understand it well. Being injured herself, she still had to rely on others—she was just forced into the role.
“Whether it hurts or not, you tell me. What do you expect your husband to say?” Tan Xue heard the voice and rushed in, squatting beside Chu Dong and gently stroking his bandaged head. “Honey, do you want to go to the bathroom?”
Chu Dong was inconvenient at the moment; otherwise, he would have jumped up. Tan Xue, usually cold and distant, was now so affectionate to her husband—had he crossed into another world?
At her words, he really felt the need and blinked quickly.
Not understanding what he meant, Tan Xue pressed her ear close to his mouth but heard nothing. Only then did she notice his mouth was still bound.
“Who did this? Why did you gag my husband?” Tan Xue ran out and soon returned with scissors. She gestured at Chu Dong’s head for a while, but didn’t dare cut.
“Let me,” Luo Feiyu took the scissors from her, seeing her hesitation.
“Don’t hurt my husband anymore. The police have already disfigured him enough—another cut and he’ll be beyond recognition,” Tan Xue nervously watched as Luo Feiyu carefully snipped away the bandages around Chu Dong’s mouth.
“What’s there to fear, already disfigured? If they cut again, just call it cosmetic surgery,” Luo Feiyu said, secretly fond of Tan Xue, finding her quite adorable.
“No, I’ll do it. Even if it’s cosmetic surgery, it has to be me,” Tan Xue snatched the scissors back, eyes wide and lips pursed as if blowing away the pain, carefully cutting.
Half an hour passed, and Chu Dong’s mouth showed no sign of being freed. Tan Xue was exhausted, sweating profusely and barely able to lift her arms.
“Oh my god, I’m dead tired. If I find out who did this, I’m going to teach them a lesson,” Tan Xue handed the scissors to Luo Feiyu, then lay down beside Chu Dong with her eyes closed. “Call me when it’s open. I’m going to rest a bit.”
Luo Feiyu, more skilled with her hands, still struggled but finally freed Chu Dong’s mouth.
“I was suffocating. What’s going on here?” Chu Dong was full of questions now that he was free.
“Ask your wife; I don’t know,” Luo Feiyu smiled and patted the truly sleeping Tan Xue. “Your husband can talk now. You two chat—I won’t disturb. Call me if you need anything.”
“Really? It’s done?” Tan Xue rubbed her eyes and got up, looking at the small “window” cut into Chu Dong’s bandages, touching it gently. “Say a word so I can hear it.”
“Wife,” Chu Dong struggled to call her.
“Who’s your wife?” Tan Xue pinched him. She had been calling Chu Dong her husband out of habit, but when he called her wife, she wasn’t used to it.
Though Chu Dong’s voice was low, his shriek was loud.
“What are you doing? If you get hurt again, it won’t be our problem,” Luo Feiyu teased, leaning against the doorframe with her arms crossed.
“Stop joking, I’m suffocating here. Please find a solution quickly,” Chu Dong was in pain and frustrated.
“Don’t ask me. Your wife handles this; I can’t help,” Luo Feiyu turned to leave.
“Wait,” Tan Xue jumped up. “You’re a nurse; this should be your responsibility. I—I have something to do, so I’ll leave now.”
Luo Feiyu grabbed her as she tried to escape. “You two are married; why involve others? Don’t shirk responsibility.” As a single woman, there was no way she could do this in front of the other woman’s husband.
“We’re not married yet. I was afraid you’d steal him. But now, I’ve changed my mind—go ahead and take him. As long as you can take him, I won’t stop you. Please, help him,” Tan Xue almost cried.
“No need. Neither of you,” Chu Dong, who had been anxious before, now spoke steadily.
Both women seemed relieved, breathing easier. Tan Xue was quick to backtrack, “I take back what I said. My husband is still mine.”
“Fine, he’s yours. I won’t compete,” Luo Feiyu was about to leave but paused, looking back at Chu Dong. “How did you solve it?”
“Right here… on the spot,” Chu Dong answered with difficulty.
“Ah!” Both women screamed and rushed out, leaving Chu Dong alone.
Some things must be faced. Tan Xue and Luo Feiyu eventually returned to Chu Dong’s room. Covering him with a thick quilt, almost with eyes closed, one stood by the bed and the other knelt on it, together helping him change his pants.
“Listen, you need to speak up next time. This is the last time. If you wet the bed again, I’ll throw you outside,” Tan Xue scolded while pinching her nose with one hand and holding the soiled pants far away with the other.
Luo Feiyu held the sheets pulled out from under him and chimed in, “Yes, last time.”
Somehow, the two had developed a tacit understanding.
Qiangzi and Haozi rushed over upon hearing the news. Seeing Chu Dong’s injuries, Qiangzi immediately flew into a rage.
“Who’s the bastard who did this? Dong, tell me—I’ll finish him.”
“Damn, that’s a dirty move. Tomorrow, I’m going to find a cop to practice on. I’ll get revenge for you,” Haozi rolled up his sleeves.
“Save it. I know what you two are like. By the way, any big news lately?” Chu Dong didn’t dare smile, still aching all over.
“Wait a moment,” Tan Xue approached first, touching Chu Dong’s head in surprise. “You recognize them now?”
“Of course. We grew up wearing open-crotch pants—if I didn’t recognize them, I’d be a ghost,” Chu Dong replied, puzzled by her words, expression unreadable but eyes full of confusion.
“So you remember everything now?” Tan Xue’s eyes widened, carefully examining Chu Dong. “How did you get hurt?”
“The boat capsized. I saw you all swim to shore. After that, I don’t know,” Chu Dong stared at Tan Xue. “Isn’t that right?”
