Chapter 109: The Female Officer Who Came to Investigate
When Tan Xue woke up again, her younger sister was still sitting beside her. Seeing Xiao Yuer’s anxious face, Tan Xue reached out to wipe the tears from her cheeks. “Why are you crying? Sister is fine.”
With a sudden sob, Xiao Yuer, who had been trying not to disturb her sister, finally broke down and cried, “Sister won’t wake up, and brother-in-law doesn’t even recognize me. Boohoo...”
“Be good, don’t cry. Sister is okay, and Dong will be fine too.” Tan Xue steeled herself, took a moment to rest and eat, then brought her sister to see Chu Dong’s attending doctor once more.
“Actually, the patient is currently experiencing transient amnesia. His language and thinking remain intact, and he should recover eventually, though the timeline is uncertain. We dare not forcibly trigger his memories now, as it might provoke extreme emotional distress, which could hinder treatment,” the doctor explained.
Tan Xue absorbed the doctor’s advice carefully. Understanding the situation, she returned to Chu Dong’s side. She thought to herself that since her godmother was abroad, it was better not to tell them about Chu Dong’s condition just yet. She would shoulder whatever happened.
As Tan Xue reached the entrance of the intensive care unit, she encountered several police officers standing there.
“Excuse me, is Chu Dong here?” a young, beautiful female officer asked. She looked vibrant and capable in her police uniform.
Tan Xue raised her head and responded coolly, “Yes. What do you want?”
There was a natural tension between the two beautiful women, especially since the officer was inquiring about someone Tan Xue cared deeply for. An undercurrent of jealousy seemed to hang in the air.
“I’m Luo Feiyu from the Criminal Investigation Team of the Development Zone Police Substation. Last Saturday afternoon, I received a distress call from Chu Dong, but I couldn’t reach him afterward. Only yesterday did I learn he was hospitalized here. I wanted to ask what happened to him,” Luo Feiyu said straightforwardly, mistaking Tan Xue’s nurse uniform for that of hospital staff.
“Last Saturday afternoon? We were together all day. How come I didn’t know he made any calls?” Tan Xue frowned, recalling that they had encountered danger that afternoon but she hadn’t noticed any call from Chu Dong.
“You two were together?” Luo Feiyu scrutinized Tan Xue with disbelief. How could such a pretty girl seem so interested in Chu Dong?
Tan Xue straightened her chest with pride. “We went to take wedding photos together. You can ask my sister—she was with us.”
Xiao Yuer, clueless but eager to support her sister, nodded vigorously.
“Oh, congratulations. By the way, what happened that afternoon? Chu Dong’s call was—”
“I didn’t see him make any call, and besides, nothing happened,” Tan Xue interrupted. She really didn’t recall Chu Dong calling.
“Maybe you just didn’t see it. But he did call.” Luo Feiyu pulled out her phone, found the call log from Chu Dong’s number, and showed it to Tan Xue.
“It’s true. I don’t know when he made that call,” Tan Xue admitted. She knew Chu Dong’s number, and the call time matched.
“Are you sure you were with him?” Luo Feiyu’s suspicions grew as Tan Xue denied the call and downplayed the situation.
“Of course.” Tan Xue’s proud nature surfaced again as she tried to push past the officer to enter the ward.
“Wait, I want to see Chu Dong,” Luo Feiyu said firmly. Her instincts as a detective told her Tan Xue wasn’t being fully honest.
“He’s ill and doesn’t want to see anyone right now,” Tan Xue said, closing the door behind her. Later, when she saw Xiao Yuer jumping outside, she opened the door to let her sister in, then closed it immediately.
Luo Feiyu saw Chu Dong lying inside, awake but seemingly not recognizing her. Even when looking at her, he appeared as if she was a stranger. This puzzled Luo Feiyu—if Chu Dong was trying to deny knowing his girlfriend, he would at least show some awkwardness, but he didn’t.
“What should we do?” one of the male officers asked Luo Feiyu.
“You all go back. There’s still plenty of work needing manpower. Inform Captain Chen. I’ll stay here and see what’s going on.” Luo Feiyu was thorough; she sensed something was amiss and wanted to get to the bottom of it.
The two male officers left, leaving Luo Feiyu alone.
Captain Chen Xiao acknowledged the report from his colleagues and dispatched them to their tasks. The haul was significant, but many things remained unclear. A ten-thousand-ton freighter filled with smuggled cars was a major case. Several ships with three to four hundred people were arrested on site without resistance. Initially, that didn’t seem unusual, but during the search, a large cache of weapons and ammunition was found, shocking everyone present.
That wasn’t all. The suspicious ship bore multiple fresh bloodstains—some sprayed, others soaked. The forensic detectives concluded the blood was recent, yet no injured parties were found. During interrogation, the detainees remained silent, revealing nothing. The receivers involved connected to Hongfa Industrial, a prominent local enterprise, complicating matters and requiring reports to higher authorities—beyond Captain Chen’s jurisdiction. Reality was often frustrating.
Despite mobilizing all personnel at the Development Zone Substation, manpower was insufficient, and Chen Xiao was overwhelmed.
Back in Chu Dong’s hospital room, Tan Xue glared fiercely at him with her captivating eyes, silent.
Chu Dong felt uneasy, confused about what was happening.
“Tell me, who is the vixen outside?” Luo Feiyu’s voice was heard outside; Tan Xue had already begun her interrogation.
“Vixen?” Chu Dong realized she meant Luo Feiyu. He wasn’t pretending ignorance—he genuinely couldn’t remember her. The charming young nurse before him seemed both familiar and strange. The female officer outside was also beautiful, but he didn’t recognize her.
“Don’t try to bluff your way out,” Tan Xue said, her jealousy burning strongly. She used to be indifferent, but now she considered Chu Dong her future husband—no, her husband already.
“I really don’t know what you’re talking about.” Chu Dong was feeling better, propped up with Xiao Yuer’s help, hands raised in a helpless gesture.
Only then did Tan Xue recall Chu Dong’s amnesia, yet her anger remained. She sat beside him, handed him an apple, and said, “You’re just like me now. When you’re better, if you don’t explain everything clearly, I won’t let you off. Eat it!”
“Sis, I want some too,” Xiao Yuer looked at her sister with a pitiful expression.
“Here, eat up. Watch him for me, don’t let him sneak anything,” Tan Xue said anxiously. “I have to go back to Dalian to arrange your trip home and get your leave sorted.”
“Don’t worry, sis. With me here, not a single fish will reach brother-in-law,” Xiao Yuer promised with her mouth full of apple, patting her chest.
“What fish? I mean the woman outside,” Tan Xue lightly flicked her sister’s head.
At the door, Tan Xue defiantly straightened her chest, signaling that waiting outside wouldn’t get Luo Feiyu anywhere.
Luo Feiyu smiled faintly, not interested in quarreling with a girl like Tan Xue. Once Tan Xue left, she stood and went to find Chu Dong’s attending doctor.
Showing her ID, Luo Feiyu began questioning, “I’m Luo Feiyu from the Dalian Development Zone Police Substation. Could you tell me what illness Chu Dong in intensive care room three has?”
“He suffered a head injury and now has amnesia. What investigation are you conducting?” The doctor, having been briefed by the housekeeper, gave a measured response.
“Do you know how he was injured?”
“While taking wedding photos, they encountered rough waves. The boat capsized and hit rocks near the shore. That’s what the family said when they arrived,” the doctor answered in detail.
“Oh. I’m a friend of Chu Dong’s. He called me for help but I lost contact afterward. May I see him?” Luo Feiyu inquired cautiously.
“Now’s not the right time. His condition is unstable, and to avoid stress, it’s best to wait,” the doctor said, accepting payment and preparing to leave. He was clearly following Tan Xue’s wishes.
“Alright, I’ll wait outside. Let me know when it’s convenient,” Luo Feiyu said. She had wanted to ask why Tan Xue and the little girl could enter, but seeing the nurse uniform, she held back.
Back outside Chu Dong’s room, Luo Feiyu had just sat down when the door opened and Xiao Yuer ran out, shouting, “Doctor, come quick! My brother-in-law needs the bathroom.”
A nurse pushing a wheelchair patient passed by and chuckled at Xiao Yuer’s anxious face. “Why don’t you help him? It’s busy now; no one’s free.”
Luo Feiyu closed her notebook and stood up. “I’ll help.”
Xiao Yuer looked at Luo Feiyu, recalling her sister’s words and feeling a bit uneasy. “You can help, but don’t give brother-in-law any fish.”
Luo Feiyu, puzzled, smiled at the cute little girl. “Do I look like I’m carrying fish?”
“Alright, alright. Never mind. Come on, help us inside.” Xiao Yuer ran back, pulled Chu Dong up from the bed, and called to Luo Feiyu outside, “Hurry, I can’t manage alone.”
Luo Feiyu entered and helped Xiao Yuer support Chu Dong as they slowly made their way out. Chu Dong was clearly uncomfortable, holding his legs tightly together and showing some tension on his face. He hadn’t dared mention his discomfort while alone with Xiao Yuer until now.
Luo Feiyu remained silent, observing whether Chu Dong truly did not recognize her. Seeing no obvious reaction even at close range, she realized that with Chu Dong in this state and Tan Xue mediating, uncovering the truth would be a difficult task.
