Chapter 104: Insulting Me Indirectly as an Old Dog
Xu Jinbao was stunned. “Qin... Commander Qin?”
Qin Quan caught sight of the scene before him, his sharp hawk-like eyes instantly fixing on Xu Jinbao. “You wretched fool, what the hell do you think you’re doing?”
Xu Jinbao dropped to his knees on the spot, torn over whether to throw away the electric baton in his hand or keep holding it.
He stammered in a panic, “Commander Qin, please let me explain—it’s not what you think, really! I was just using the electric baton to massage Mr. Lu’s back, that’s all!”
His voice was quivering as he clung to Lu Ye’s trouser leg, pleading, “Mr. Lu, please, say something for me!”
Lu Ye immediately put on a look of aggrieved innocence. “You already locked me up in the dark room, Xu. I sat on that torture bench just as you told me. You beat me with the electric baton and I took it. What more do you want me to say?”
What the hell?
That wasn’t the attitude he’d had just now! Just a moment ago, he was acting all high and mighty, untouchable.
It was at that moment Xu Jinbao realized that Lu Ye had set him up—dug a pit for him, and he’d jumped right in without a second thought.
Now both Qin Quan and Cai Yueyao had witnessed him beating Lu Ye with an electric baton.
Even if he jumped into the Yellow River, he couldn’t wash himself clean.
Cai Yueyao frowned. “Xu Jinbao, you’ll be waiting for your day in military court.”
Xu Jinbao wailed, “Lu Ye, you bastard, you’ve ruined me!”
Wham!
Qin Quan slammed his cane down on Xu Jinbao’s head with a brutal crack, roaring, “Are you calling me an old dog in roundabout terms? He’s even closer to me than my own grandson!”
“Men, take this bastard away!”
Blood streaming from his head, Xu Jinbao was dragged out in a daze, arms pinned as he was hauled away...
Only the three of them remained in the dark cell.
Lu Ye was still groaning theatrically, “Ow, ow, that hurts!”
Qin Quan knocked him on the head with his knuckles, chuckling, “Enough with the act, kid. That over-the-top performance of yours couldn’t fool me for a second. Who do you think you’re tricking?”
“Heh heh...”
Back in the day, Lu Ye had served directly under Qin Quan’s command, dispatched by him for peacekeeping and counterterrorism in the Middle East. It was on his orders, too, that Lu Ye had been forced into a three-year relationship with Cai Yueyao...
Qin Quan truly regarded Lu Ye as one of his own, but he doted on Cai Yueyao even more.
Learning that the two young people he’d pinned such hopes on had ultimately gone their separate ways left him with a measure of regret he couldn’t dispel.
“Sigh, I really don’t know what the boy was thinking. What was wrong with Yueyao? She’s beautiful, comes from money, and devoted herself entirely to him. How could she not move his heart of stone?”
In front of Cai Yueyao, Qin Quan thought he was being perfectly fair.
Usually so arrogant and domineering, Cai Yueyao blushed at these words, tugged Qin Quan’s arm, and whispered, “Grandpa Qin, please don’t say any more.”
Qin Quan shook his head and sighed. “You’re right. He’s married to another girl now—there’s no point in me going on about it.”
Lu Ye scratched his nose awkwardly and shot Cai Yueyao a grateful look. She only huffed and rolled her eyes at him.
Lu Ye laughed. “Grandpa Qin, let’s go talk outside. This dark cell isn’t exactly the best place to reminisce.”
“Mm. By the way, I think I saw a lovely young lady at the door earlier. That’s your wife, isn’t it?”
Lu Ye was momentarily bewildered, turning to Cai Yueyao. “My wife’s here too?”
Cai Yueyao nodded. “She’s been waiting outside for you all this time.”
Before she’d even finished speaking, Lu Ye had already dashed out.
Qin Quan and Cai Yueyao were left staring at each other in speechless exasperation, uttering the same word in unison: “Scoundrel!”
…
Meanwhile, Su Qianqian stood outside with the armed guards, nerves on edge. She’d never expected such a display of force.
Bai Wen was so anxious she could barely stand, and it was only with Ye Qiu’s support that she managed to stay upright. “Don’t be afraid, Sister Bai. I think they’re here to help my brother.”
Bai Wen forced a bitter smile. “I know, but I’m still nervous. I’ve never seen anything like this.”
After a while, Su Qianqian finally saw Lu Ye sprinting out.
“Wife, I’m out!”
He swept Su Qianqian up and spun her around several times. Su Qianqian, flustered, protested, “Put me down! Everyone’s watching!”
Lu Ye laughed heartily. “No way! I haven’t seen you in over two hours—I missed you like crazy!”
Su Qianqian covered her blushing face, scolding, “Shameless! What a sight you are!”
Cai Yueyao, supporting Qin Quan as they walked out, caught sight of the affectionate couple and felt an inexplicable ache in her heart.
She and Lu Ye had dated for three years, yet he’d never once smiled at her with such genuine happiness, never held her in such an embrace.
Qin Quan sighed softly. “Child, you need to let go. You can’t force these things.”
Cai Yueyao wiped her eyes, nodded, and smiled. “I know.”
“And besides, Grandpa Qin, you already tried forcing him once.”
Qin Quan laughed heartily. “Letting go of him sooner or later, one day you’ll find true happiness that belongs to you.”
After indulging themselves, Lu Ye set Su Qianqian down and led her over to Qin Quan.
“Grandpa Qin, this is my wife, Su Qianqian.”
With poise and grace, Su Qianqian greeted him, “Grandpa Qin.”
Qin Quan nodded kindly. “Ah!”
Then he sighed. “Lu Ye used to turn his nose up even at Yueyao, and I could never figure out why... Just how remarkable must a girl be to make this rascal willingly become a live-in son-in-law?”
“Now that I’ve met Qianqian, I think I understand a little!”
Su Qianqian was both flattered and a little embarrassed—Grandpa Qin was praising her in a roundabout way!
Cai Yueyao, however, was none too pleased and retorted, “Grandpa Qin, are you saying I’m not as good as that old woman?”
Qin Quan burst out laughing. “You’re both outstanding in your own ways. Meeting either of you is a blessing this rascal earned over eight lifetimes. It’s not that you’re inferior—it’s just that fate is mysterious and things are destined as they are.”
After exchanging pleasantries, Qin Quan strode down the steps before the main doors and addressed the hundreds of guards. “You can all return now. Tonight I want to catch up with the youngsters.”
“Yes, sir!”
With military precision, the troops turned and boarded their vehicles, hundreds of Dongfeng Warrior trucks roaring to life and rolling out in grand formation.
As for Xu Jinbao, naturally he was taken away with the rest.
Qin Quan settled into the front passenger seat of Cai Yueyao’s Audi RS7.
Cai Yueyao started the engine and called out to Lu Ye, “I’m going to take Grandpa Qin for a walk. In the meantime, you should go back to the hotel, wash up, and get rid of the bad luck. We’ll meet later at Jingxiang Yipin.”
Lu Ye nodded. “Alright!”
With a roar, the Audi RS7 sped off.
Lu Ye turned to Ye Qiu and smiled. “Qiu, you’ve really gone out of your way for me.”
Ye Qiu blushed, scratching his head. “You’re too polite, brother. I didn’t really do much to help.”
Lu Ye said, “Why don’t you join us for dinner later? My Grandpa Qin might even hand you a few military equipment orders.”
Since Ye Qiu sincerely regarded him as an older brother, Lu Ye repaid him with genuine goodwill.
Ye Qiu replied gratefully, “Sure, no problem!”
Why would he refuse? If he could secure military contracts, that would be the ultimate testament to the Ye family’s quality.
After agreeing to meet at Jingxiang Yipin, Bai Wen left with Ye Qiu so that the passenger seat of the blue-and-white porcelain LaFerrari would be free for Lu Ye.
On the way back to the hotel, Su Qianqian asked, “So Grandpa Qin was your old boss?”
Lu Ye nodded. “Yes, I used to serve directly under him. He treated me like a grandson.”
Su Qianqian smiled. “But I get the feeling he cares even more for your ex-girlfriend.”
Lu Ye pursed his lips. “You’re not wrong. The one who forced me into a relationship with Cai was Grandpa Qin.”
Su Qianqian thought for a moment and said, “When Qiu said there was nothing he could do to get you out, I was honestly terrified.”
Lu Ye looked at her in surprise. “Did you forget I’m a special agent?”
Su Qianqian pouted. “Of course I didn’t forget, but I couldn’t reveal your identity to outsiders! Chen Xi and Luo Ying are both traveling right now—I didn’t even know who to turn to for help.”
Lu Ye gave her a thumbs-up and grinned. “The way you acted all flustered back then was actually the biggest help you could have given me.”
