Chapter 66: Shadow Wolf, Gold Rank?
"This is the Shadow Wolf!" Wang Qian’s heart suddenly leapt with joy. What he had thought to be a stroke of bad luck had turned out to be so easily accomplished—surely a good omen.
"Yes, that’s the Shadow Wolf," Gao Gen’s eyes gleamed as he spoke. "Wang Qian, if I’m not mistaken, your hidden quest must be to slay the Shadow Wolf, isn’t it?"
"How did you know?" Wang Qian eyed Gao Gen warily. Hidden quests were something only the quest holder could know; no one else could possibly discern another’s secret tasks.
"Don’t be tense," Gao Gen replied with a smile. "To be honest, my hidden quest is to assist you in slaying the Shadow Wolf, and to prevent Du Wanting from killing whatever it is she needs."
"But for me, completing the hidden quest is just a secondary condition. I have no interest in the quest’s reward, so whether I help you deal with this Shadow Wolf depends entirely on whether you’ll help me stop Du Wanting."
Wang Qian answered bluntly, "Rest assured, as long as you help me finish off this beast, if we join up with Du Wanting and the others later, I won’t lift a finger."
"As long as I don’t intervene, with only Chong Di and Du Wanting’s abilities, they couldn’t possibly kill a creature of this tier."
"That should settle it, shouldn’t it?"
Gao Gen was quite satisfied with Wang Qian’s words. If this fellow got involved, his own hidden quest would be much harder to complete.
After all, though the reward wasn’t essential, it could fetch a good price in the trading market. As long as he could keep Wang Qian in check, he had nothing to fear from Gao Chong and that girl.
A golden-tier? That was out of their reach.
Meanwhile, their conversation had been overheard by Lin Han, who was perched above them. He had arrived almost simultaneously with the Shadow Wolf, and now listened quietly from his vantage in the trees.
Just as he expected: since Wang Qian’s hidden quest was to kill the Shadow Wolf, there would naturally be someone whose quest was the opposite.
He found it a bit unfair. If he hadn’t had the system, with such a hidden quest, how could these two weaklings compete with those already preparing for their fourth advancement?
Such imbalance was inherent. But then, on the path of cultivation, what fairness could there be?
Now that he was here, everything would proceed according to his rhythm.
"As long as we give you the finishing blow, that should suffice," Gao Gen mused. This was a golden-tier Shadow Wolf; even together, it would be difficult to subdue.
Wang Qian nodded. "Exactly. Just let me deliver the final strike. No need to hold back now—if I’m the one who kills it, everything counts."
"That’s settled, then. Let’s go!"
With that, both men’s gazes sharpened, their resolve firm. A golden-tier Shadow Wolf demanded their utmost effort; the slightest carelessness could cost them their lives.
Unless the Shadow Wolf was utterly spent, neither dared relax.
The Shadow Wolf lunged forward, its powerful claws seeming as though they could tear the sky asunder.
Compared to the Steel-patterned Tiger they’d met before, this Shadow Wolf lacked such formidable defenses; all they needed was to keep it engaged, nothing more.
This was a collision of pure might!
Watching the battle, Lin Han couldn’t help but admire the pair.
Strong indeed!
Faced with a task that required only combat prowess and skill, both wielded their abilities expertly.
It was clear: these two were battle-hardened warriors.
Their trouble with the Steel-patterned Tiger had been only because they didn’t know its weakness; now, fighting the Shadow Wolf, their cooperation was markedly more fluid.
"As expected—two level thirty main combat professionals fighting a golden-tier Shadow Wolf aren’t under much pressure," Lin Han thought.
As planned, he only had to prevent them from finishing the kill.
There was no need for haste; he would wait until the two wore the Shadow Wolf down, then swoop in to claim the prize.
"It’s almost time!"
Gao Gen plunged his blade into the Shadow Wolf’s back. The beast roared, then collapsed to the ground.
In mere minutes, the Shadow Wolf was riddled with wounds.
Wang Qian halted, gazing at their prize with joy. "I didn’t expect things to go so smoothly. Teaming up with main combat classes really makes hunting comfortable."
"When this quest is done, should we exchange contact info? We could team up for dungeons; it’s been ages since I met someone whose temperament matched mine so well."
Gao Gen waved him off. "Forget it. When this quest ends, we’ll go our separate ways. If fate brings us together again, we can talk then."
"But enough chit-chat—let’s finish off your Shadow Wolf. And if any gear drops, we split it equally."
"Agreed," Wang Qian replied readily. "I know someone in the trading market who won’t lowball us."
With that, Wang Qian approached the Shadow Wolf, chuckling, "Little beast, I hadn’t even come looking for you, yet you delivered yourself. Don’t blame me for being ruthless!"
He raised his longsword and brought it down upon the Shadow Wolf’s head.
Just as he thought success was within his grasp, a figure suddenly blocked their way.
"Who!"
"Who are you!"
Both Wang Qian and Gao Gen were startled by the interruption at such a critical moment.
"My friends, would you do an old man a favor—how about gifting me this Shadow Wolf as a greeting?"
Lin Han, now wearing the visage of an elder, appeared before them, gripping Wang Qian’s sword arm tightly.
"You old man, are you looking for trouble?" Wang Qian tried to shake him off, but his arm wouldn’t budge.
What power was this!
He couldn’t resist at all!
A warrior?
Lin Han spoke calmly, "Young man, this Shadow Wolf is to my liking. If you gift it to me today, should you ever need anything, come find me in Yaoguang City."
"If I can help, I surely will."
Wang Qian’s gaze grew cold. "You say I should just hand it to you? Wouldn’t that make me lose all face?"
