“Mayor, according to the schedule from the Imperial Capital, the investigation team will arrive in ten minutes.”

At this moment, Sun Hu was dressed formally, standing alongside Nantian as they awaited the arrival of the team from the capital.

Ordinarily, it might have seemed inappropriate for the head of the Detection Department to be present on such an occasion, but since Sun Hu had been the first to uncover the situation, it was only fitting that he accompany them.

After all, nobody understood the current circumstances better than Sun Hu. Nantian was really just there as a symbolic gesture to greet the investigative delegation from the capital; the real briefing and negotiations would rely on Sun Hu’s assistance.

Nantian glanced at his watch and said, “It’s about time.”

As soon as he spoke, figures could be seen flying toward the border of Huiyue City.

“They’re here!”

Nantian and his entourage hurried forward to greet them.

“Mayor Nantian?”

The elder at the forefront landed, eyeing Nantian with little reverence; after all, he had been coerced into coming here.

This sort of thankless task offered little benefit beyond earning some local respect.

“That’s right, I am Nantian, Mayor of Huiyue City. You must be the investigation team from the capital.”

Nantian greeted them warmly. According to his secretary, the man before him was a Supreme of level seventy—a true powerhouse from the capital!

The elder nodded and said, “My name is Silintian, level seventy-six, Grand Magus of the Shaking Heavens—what you’d call a mage.”

“But I prefer to call myself a Battle Mage. I heard your current predicament was likely caused by a mage, so they sent me.”

Nantian and the others were taken aback; it was the first time they’d heard such a title, clearly another hidden profession.

It was obvious the Empire was taking their situation seriously, having sent such a formidable figure to assist.

“Elder Silintian, please, come inside so we can speak further. Perhaps we could share a meal.”

Nantian smiled, stepping aside to make way for the team.

Silintian, hands clasped behind his back, walked inside and said, “Let’s skip the meal. I’m not fond of such formalities. Let’s resolve this quickly; we still need to return and defend the capital.”

Snubbed, Nantian’s expression soured, but he remained courteous. “You’re truly a pragmatic man, Elder Silintian. If that’s your wish, we’ll forgo the meal.”

Though Nantian disliked this man, he had no choice but to endure it—for they were here to help. Driving them away would leave Huiyue City with no one to turn to.

Should they return to the capital and report that the locals were uncooperative, what recourse would Nantian have?

“Enough. Who was the first to notice the anomaly? Speak up. To cause trouble in our jurisdiction—do they think so little of us?”

Silintian’s tone brimmed with arrogance, as if nothing in heaven or earth could faze him.

Yet at such a level, he was entitled to his pride. A Supreme Mage was, by any measure, a true power.

Especially with a hidden profession—his strength was something to be proud of.

“Elder, I was the first to discover it,” Sun Hu quickly stepped forward. “I am Sun Hu, head of the Detection Department in Huiyue City. Our department was the first to detect both disasters. If you have any questions, you can ask me directly.”

“Sun Hu? I’ve heard of you. Weren’t you previously stationed in the capital?” Silintian glanced at him but didn’t dwell on it.

Sun Hu was startled. He had indeed once worked in a minor department in the capital, but that was long ago before he was transferred to Huiyue City.

The elder actually knew his name, though Sun Hu found Silintian’s name unfamiliar.

“No need to be surprised. It’s normal that you don’t know me. At my level, remembering certain things comes easily. You merely left an impression,” Silintian said. “By the way, now that our team has arrived, Huiyue City should open up. There’s no need for further lockdown.”

Nantian stepped forward. “Elder Silintian, that might not be wise. We still have no leads on the true culprit. If they were to enter the city, it would be a great disservice to our people.”

“If that happens, we’ll be in real trouble.”

Nantian was unwilling to take such a risk. If the perpetrator unleashed a forbidden spell within the city, it wouldn’t merely be a matter of injuries—countless families could be destroyed by such devastation.

Huiyue City itself could be reduced to ruins.

Silintian sneered. “Now that I am here, no one will dare cause chaos in Huiyue City. Or is it that you, Mayor Nantian, don’t trust our investigation team?”

“I wouldn’t dare. I have absolute faith in your abilities—it’s only that it seems somewhat risky.”

Nantian hurriedly explained.

“Open it up,” Silintian repeated. “Do you really think a Supreme is someone you could keep out? There are countless ways for someone of our caliber to enter Huiyue City undetected. To us, your obstacles are mere toys.”

“If you doubt it, I could demonstrate right now—you wouldn’t even know how I managed to get inside.”

At these words, Mayor Nantian’s throat tightened. Though Silintian’s voice was calm, even emotionless, his confidence and arrogance left a deep impression.

If he had to describe the feeling—

Threat!

This was a blatant threat!

“Very well, we’ll do as you say. I’ll give the order shortly.”

Nantian played a subtle game, shifting all responsibility onto Silintian.

It wasn’t his decision to lift the lockdown—it was at the elder’s request.

Should anything go wrong, it wouldn’t be the city government’s fault.

“Sun Hu, was it? Tell me everything that’s happened.”

At Silintian’s request, Sun Hu recounted both incidents in detail.

Silintian pondered for a moment and said, “By your account, it is indeed too much of a coincidence. It must be the work of the same person.”

“I can’t think of any Supreme Mage capable of casting forbidden spells like this—at least none I know.”

“Before coming here, I investigated—all level-seventy mages with records in the Empire are accounted for.”

“None of them are anywhere near Huiyue City.”

“In other words, this mage-class powerhouse who appeared out of nowhere—he is definitely not from our Empire!”
