That Disabled Overbearing CEO Male Lead (18)
The senior management of the Shen Corporation was gripped by fear and uncertainty after Shen Zhe was imprisoned. Shen Huai seized the opportunity to conduct a sweeping purge, eliminating a cohort of parasites within the company. The board of directors voiced criticism against Shen Huai’s unsparing methods and ruthless tactics; the elders from the Shen family branch were particularly displeased.
While the old patriarch outwardly supported his direct grandson against others, in private, he too noted Shen Huai’s uncharacteristically hard-edged approach this time, worrying he might stray from the right path. Thus, he rarely summoned Shen Huai back to the ancestral home for a meal.
“I’ve heard there’s a young guest living at your house lately.”
The old patriarch did not mention the company’s affairs.
Shen Huai took a sip of tea, his tone measured and unhurried. “There isn’t much that can be kept from you, Grandfather.”
“Is she doing well?”
Both grandfather and grandson understood the deeper meaning behind the question. Shen Huai could not keep anyone close, lest misfortune befall them. At the same time, the patriarch was inquiring about Si Jiu’s character and temperament.
Shen Huai had handled the matter of Si Jiu stealing his files and handing them to Shen Zhe with swift precision; the document never left the villa. Aside from those involved, no one else knew of it.
Lowering his gaze, Shen Huai replied warmly, “She is very well.”
“All these years, you’ve suffered much. Having someone attentive by your side is a blessing.” The old patriarch rubbed the prayer beads in his hand, weighed his words, and continued, “Your second uncle…”
“Grandfather, over the years, Second Uncle has abused his power for personal gain, taking advantage of his position to amass wealth. Initially, I didn't wish to be too harsh out of familial feeling. But he’s been buying influence in the company and has closely associated with President Wu of Prosperity Group—”
At this point, the old patriarch’s expression changed. It was well-known that Prosperity Group and the Shen Corporation were bitter rivals with longstanding enmity. Shen Zhe had crossed a line.
The old patriarch closed his eyes for a moment; when he opened them, his gaze was sharp. “You did well.”
Shen Huai smiled, sensing there was no need to say more.
“You haven’t had this year’s medical examination yet?”
Shen Huai glanced at his legs. “Whether I do or not, it makes little difference.”
“Nonsense,” the old patriarch said, displeased. “You must go. Today.”
“Grandfather, after so many years of no improvement, I don’t wish to struggle anymore.”
Whether it was his legs, or the grim reality that he wouldn’t live past thirty.
“Don’t be absurd.” The old patriarch knew what he said was factual, but refused to accept it. “Contact the hospital immediately. I’ll go with you now.”
“Grandfather—”
“No more arguments.”
Knowing his grandfather’s stubbornness, Shen Huai had no choice but to instruct his assistant to notify the hospital, and together with the patriarch, now dressed for the occasion, they set off.
An hour later, both Shen Huai and the old patriarch stared at the examination results in disbelief.
The attending physician was beaming with joy. “Young Master Shen’s physical functions have improved dramatically; all indicators are gradually approaching normal values, and as for his legs—”
“Congratulations, recovery is in sight.”
The old patriarch’s eyes grew moist, barely able to contain his emotions. “Are you saying… his health is improving, and his legs can recover?”
It wasn’t that he hadn’t understood, but he dared not believe it.
“Yes, exactly as you heard. Please rest assured.”
After so many years on the brink of despair, who could have imagined such a dramatic reversal of fortune?
The doctor himself was puzzled. Shen Huai’s physical decline had defied diagnosis; his legs had gradually lost strength in his adolescence, and no matter what methods were tried, there was no identifiable cause, nor effective treatment.
Now, inexplicably, he was recovering on his own.
“We’ll schedule regular checkups from now on, and I’ll design a rehabilitation program to assist Young Master Shen’s recovery. Congratulations, truly.”
Shen Huai’s emotions were not as openly displayed as the old patriarch’s, but his eyes shimmered with enigmatic light.
Was this… a miracle?
The first name that came to his mind was Si Jiu.
