The First Brother Hero Who Never Likes to Eat, Part Four
Zhao Yue and her boyfriend Song Fei arrived quickly.
The moment they entered the ward, they headed straight for Si Jiu. Before Si Jiu could even manage a smile, Zhao Yue slapped away the hands she had stretched out for a hug. Before she said a word, her eyes were already red.
“Xu Weiwan, are you asking for a beating?” she said fiercely.
Si Jiu pouted. “What is it? If you didn’t want to bring me supper in the middle of the night, you could have said so sooner. I’m still a patient, you know. You hit me so hard.”
Tears spilled from Zhao Yue’s eyes. She hugged Si Jiu and burst into sobs. Between cries she cursed, “Xu Weiwan, you pathetic thing. How can you be this amazing? You’re not even afraid of killing yourself, so why would you be afraid of living? Lin Yang and Xu Weilai, that scumbag and that bitch, may they last forever together. Why are you so stupid?”
Her wailing was impossible to ignore, and it made Si Jiu’s head ache.
Song Fei stood to one side, thoroughly embarrassed. Catching Si Jiu’s look of help, he hurried over to soothe her. “All right, all right, this is a hospital. Keep your voice down. Wanwan is starving. Let her eat first, okay?”
Zhao Yue realized belatedly that making a scene in a hospital was indeed improper, so she let the matter drop.
Then she used Song Fei as a step and promptly discarded him. “Move aside. Don’t get all mushy with me.”
Their darling Wanwan had just suffered heartbreak. How could you stand there being all affectionate with me and not stab her in the heart?
Song Fei caught his girlfriend’s silent signal, blinked to show he understood, and very naturally stepped away to sit on a chair.
Zhao Yue wiped her tears and opened the lunch box she had brought.
Inside was a white, plump box of dumplings, still steaming.
“It was too late, and I figured no shops would still be open, so I boiled some dumplings at home for you. Eat while they’re hot.”
She handed the chopsticks to Si Jiu, then suddenly drew her hand back. “Can a patient even eat dumplings? If not, I’ll go ask the nurse.”
Si Jiu had only just called out before she was gone.
Si Jiu and Song Fei exchanged a look, both wearing the helpless expression of people long used to this.
The ward fell quiet at once. Song Fei carefully studied Si Jiu, and after thinking it over again and again, said, “Wanwan, don’t do anything foolish again in the future. Yueyue really cares about you. Just now, when she asked the nurse at the station for your room number and overheard that hint about why you were admitted, her face went white.
“If you’re ever upset about something, come to us.
“Yueyue and I both think of you as family. You know that, right?”
Si Jiu gave a soft “mm,” looking obedient and attentive. “I acted on impulse this time. I’ll never do it again.”
Barely had those words left her mouth when Zhao Yue came back.
“It’s fine to eat, it’s fine to eat. Hurry up, Wanwan.”
Si Jiu took the chopsticks and picked up a plump white dumpling, taking a bite.
The skin was thin and the filling plentiful, the juices rich and full. The fragrance lingered on the tongue.
The scent drifted through the ward.
One person ate with relish, savoring every bite.
Another frowned at the smell, massaging a stomach that kept cramping.
Si Jiu was not feeling very well and did not eat much. After a few pieces, she set the chopsticks down.
“Wanwan, you should eat more. You’re a food streamer, so why are you so thin you look like a bean sprout? Look at you—you’re so skinny I can even see your veins.”
Si Jiu smiled with her lips pressed together. “Who says a food streamer can’t be thin? Besides, I’m just a mukbang streamer, not one of those giant-eating champions. Very different, okay?”
“Well, you’re both in the food business, aren’t you? And hey, haven’t you noticed those chefs are all fat and sturdy?”
Si Jiu was utterly amused. “What kind of description is that? Don’t misuse idioms. It sounds so strange.”
When she smiled, her brows and eyes curved with such bright liveliness that she looked especially beautiful, so vivid and warm that anyone seeing her would feel their own mood lift as well.
