The Lead Who Never Liked to Eat, Part 2
It was truly amazing how much one could witness simply by living long enough.
Sizhu pressed a hand to her throbbing forehead, just about to sort out the bitter enmity between Xu Weiwang and Xu Weilai, when footsteps sounded outside the door. A moment later, the door to the ward was pushed open.
A delicate, sweet-faced girl walked in arm in arm with a refined man in a suit and gold-rimmed glasses.
Memory stirred on its own: Xu Weilai and Lin Yang.
Along with it came a swell of bitterness and an indescribable sadness.
Sizhu: ...
So this was the difference between reading a text and being dropped into one.
The immersion was there, but the host body's emotions affected her far too much.
Fortunately, Sizhu was not someone with a very strong capacity for empathy.
To put it playfully, she was heartless and carefree. To put it more plainly, she was cold and indifferent.
Xu Weilai spotted Sizhu at once on the bed nearest the door.
"Sister, Lin Yang and I came to see you."
Her face was full of concern, and there was not the slightest trace of performance in it; even her eyes were faintly wet.
Sizhu adjusted her expression and said coolly, with a hint of weakness, "What are you here for?"
Lin Yang looked at Xu Weilai on the hospital bed, dressed in a patient gown and deathly pale. She kept her eyes lowered, every inch of her saying, I do not welcome you.
Her hand, resting on the blanket, had an IV line inserted, and the loose sleeve made the wrist beneath it look even thinner and more frail.
A sharp pang passed through Lin Yang's heart.
After all, she was the girl he had loved for five years.
His gaze softened unconsciously, and his voice grew gentle and low. "How are you feeling? Better?"
Seeing this, Xu Weilai turned her head and bit her lip, tightening her hold on Lin Yang's arm.
Sizhu ignored him.
"Oh, Sister, are you upset that we only came to see you now?
"Please don't be angry. Today we were busy with the engagement, and only after getting the call did we know something had happened to you. We dropped everything and rushed over right away.
"But Sister, how could there suddenly be a gas leak at home? Weren't the safety inspections only done a few days ago? And of all days, it had to happen on the very day of mine and Lin Yang's engagement. That's really too much of a coincidence."
Sizhu's face went pale. "What do you mean? You—you think I did it on purpose? To ruin your engagement?"
Xu Weilai covered her mouth with a cry of surprise, her face flushing red with alarm. "Sister, that's not what I meant."
But Lin Yang frowned, clearly having begun to think about Xu Weilai's words. The warmth in the way he looked at Sizhu had already faded.
Tch. What a white lotus.
"If that's not what you meant, then what did you mean?" Sizhu said with a wounded expression. "I don't know why you hate me so much. You want to take everything from me. You want my parents, you want Lin Yang—why? Even after all this, you still won't let me go?"
As she spoke, tears like pearls rolled down her cheeks one after another.
She cried in a way that could wring pity from stone.
Xu Weilai was stunned.
Something felt off—but before she could think further, before she could even make her move, she heard Xu Weilai let out a faint sob and yank the blanket over her head, her voice breaking as she said, "Leave. I don't want to see you."
