Chapter 54: Diverting Disaster Eastward, Maximum Skill in Shifting Blame

Standing on the stone bridge, dark, tangled waterweed thrust up from the river on either side, thrashing wildly like claws in the air.
It was the first time Zhang’s father had witnessed such a spectacle, and even he could not help being startled. His expression changed at once.
“Please lead the way, Patriarch Zhang. We’ll go to the Sandbank immediately.”
“Rest assured, Brother Xiao.”
With his treasured sword in hand, Zhang’s father hacked a path forward. Great swathes of waterweed were severed one after another, while Ye Feifan followed behind, pulling Zhang Da along by the arm.
The last time, Zhang Da’s frantic confusion had made his downfall understandable. Now that he was mentally prepared, he was not nearly as disheveled as before and could just barely keep pace.
Zhang’s father was formidable, but Ye Feifan had subjected him to Dream-Fishing strikes for several days in a row. His concentration was still far from perfect. He was ambushed by the waterweed several times, leaving several more bloody marks across his body.
The living example before him left Ye Feifan shaken as well. It seemed that one’s energy had a tremendous impact on combat. If he were to fight someone to the death tomorrow and land such a blow on his enemy beforehand, the odds of his opponent’s downfall would rise by several levels.
As he ran, Ye Feifan secretly scattered the crushed Buddha statues and cremated remains from his system storage into the Drowning River.
In the areas where the ashes fell, the waterweed no longer dared to rampage. The suppression of rank made them suffer, and the ashes soon sank to the bottom of the river, vanishing without a trace.
After scattering the ashes, Ye Feifan took out the jade bottle and began waving it about, attracting Zhang’s father’s attention.
Wherever the colored liquid fell into the river, the waterweed withered instantly. Clearly, it was their natural nemesis.
Zhang’s father felt a pang of regret. It seemed Ye Feifan’s painstaking efforts had indeed yielded results, and those things truly feared the substance. But using it in the Drowning River seemed like a waste.
After half an hour of running, the three finally reached the Sandbank.
Once they stepped onto the muddy ground of the Sandbank, the waterweed beside the bridge became much more restrained. A dense mass of humanoid shadows also surrounded the exit.

When Big Yellow was here, he never came inside either. Could there be some other dangerous creature in the outpost now?
“Why is it them again?” Zhang Da said, close to breaking down.
“Something is wrong. Let’s go in and take a look.”
Zhang’s father went first and cautiously opened the wooden door. There was nothing inside the outpost—only the same table and stools as before.
After what had happened last time, Zhang Da had matured considerably. He was extremely tense now, and even offered his father a theory.
“The outpost is not simple. There may be some kind of mechanism hidden inside…”
“Da’er is right. There may indeed be a mechanism concealed here. Let’s search for it.”
The three of them felt along the walls and searched every corner, hoping to find the mechanism they suspected was there.
Ye Feifan had the strange feeling that someone was watching him. He cast an almost imperceptible glance at the ceiling, and his heart nearly leaped from his chest.
Big Yellow was clinging tightly to the ceiling, even giving him a grin.
Zhang’s father had not sensed Big Yellow’s gaze immediately. It was highly likely that his severe loss of energy had significantly diminished his perception.
“I found it!”
Ye Feifan hurriedly looked over. Zhang Da had pushed aside a brick, revealing a faceless Buddha statue draped in red robes, standing silently within.
At first glance, it became clear that the table had been intended for offerings.

Just then, a piece of jade dropped onto the table. Ye Feifan hurriedly closed his eyes.
“It’s an ambush!”
Zhang’s father and Zhang Da reacted half a beat too slowly. A brilliant white light flashed, causing their eyes to water violently. Covering their eyes, they stood helplessly in place.
When Ye Feifan opened his eyes, the Buddha statue had vanished. Only a little dust remained on the offering table, and Big Yellow had disappeared from the ceiling as well.
Ye Feifan quickly took out a bottle of eye drops he had drawn and put several drops into each eye.
It took quite some time before Zhang’s father’s vision cleared somewhat. What he saw was Ye Feifan with tears streaming down his face, while Zhang Da stood beside the table with his eyes shut.
The sudden attack had caught all three of them completely off guard.
After a long while, Ye Feifan slowly opened his eyes. His expression was pained and conflicted as he asked first, “What was that just now?”
Staring at the vanished Buddha statue, Zhang’s father’s eyes flickered. “I don’t know. They took the statue away.”
The struggles between the great clans were fierce.
