Chapter 65 A Rainbow-Like Long Pass (Please Add to Your Favorites)
Following the post-match review and pre-match tactical briefing, Tong Xianfeng announced the dismissal, and everyone waited to return to their rooms.
Just as Wei Lai stepped out of Tong Xianfeng’s room, someone called out to him.
Santos stopped Wei Lai and chattered away incessantly, but Wei Lai couldn't understand a single word.
With no other choice, Wei Lai had to call for an interpreter.
He called He Chaoyao over to translate. Santos conveyed his message to He Chaoyao, whose expression turned to one of surprise.
"Are you sure?" He Chaoyao asked, looking at Santos.
Santos nodded emphatically.
"Alright, I get it!"
He Chaoyao turned back to look at Wei Lai. "Santos told me that during attacks, you can push up into the half-spaces!"
"Huh?" Wei Lai was stunned. "He wants me to push into the half-spaces?"
He Chaoyao nodded, pointing at Santos.
"He said so!"
Santos immediately gave Wei Lai a thumbs-up to indicate that Wei Lai was capable of taking on this role.
At this, Wei Lai grinned and waved his hands frantically. "Help me tell him that I appreciate his trust, but my crosses—my crossing ability is terrible!"
He Chaoyao translated once more.
Santos wore a puzzled look and said a few more words.
"He says that's impossible," He Chaoyao couldn't help laughing. "He says your cut-back passing is so steady, how could you possibly not know how to cross?"
Wei Lai grinned, though he couldn't really blame Santos.
After all, Wei Lai himself was a bit of a freak of nature; his performance required a specific tactical system to back it up. To put it bluntly, he could perform well within a designated environment.
Ask him to defend, and he was quite skilled.
But ask him to attack, and he was genuinely hopeless.
The reason Santos had this misconception was likely because Wei Lai’s decision-making was so sound that Santos naturally assumed Wei Lai's various attributes were all well-rounded, even offering to sacrifice his own position for it.
When Green Lion attacked, their formation would shift to a 3-2-2-3.
With three defenders at the back and two defensive midfielders in the center, one of the fullbacks, along with Yu Jiahe, would naturally push up into the forward half-spaces to act as a second wave of support behind the front line. Alternatively, the front line could tuck inside while the fullbacks and Yu Jiahe pushed wide to break through—all of these were possibilities.
However, this required one prerequisite: crossing technique.
As for Wei Lai's crosses, they were slow and suffered from massive trajectory errors, rendering them practically nonexistent.
Therefore, pushing him up front would yield zero results!
When He Chaoyao once again relayed Wei Lai's explanation, Santos still wore a somewhat eccentric expression, but ultimately accepted it.
On the way back, Wei Lai remained silent.
"What's wrong?" He Chaoyao asked.
"It feels so frustrating!" Wei Lai replied.
He Chaoyao was silent for a moment. "Keep it up. You can practice and get better."
Wei Lai's rate of improvement was the fastest of anyone, and he believed Wei Lai could do even better.
Wei Lai took a deep breath.
"Yes, I can do it, I'm sure of it!"
His tone was full of determination!
......
Inside the simulation space, Wei Lai was undergoing training for the "Glory of 1992" course.
Although "The Broken Hairdryer" class had been suspended, this one had not.
Right now, Wei Lai was training alongside these Manchester United youth academy players.
Wei Lai lingered at the very back of the group, his eyes fixed firmly ahead.
After carefully confirming it several times, he was certain that the mist over the 'Cool Coach's' face had not dissipated.
Moreover, the "Glory of 1992" curriculum clearly stated that flexible ankle training was included within the course.
This meant the curriculum had been overlaid, but not cancelled.
Thinking of this, Wei Lai immediately quickened his pace, scurrying over to the side of the 'Cool Coach'.
"I'm going to report you!"
Cool Coach: "!!!"
"You still haven't taught me anything!" Wei Lai complained with a grievance.
Cool Coach: "Didn't I help you find other instructors?"
"But the course includes flexible ankles, which means your curriculum is still active, but you aren't teaching me, so I'm going to report you!"
"I..." Cool Coach was at a loss for words. He criticized, "Why are you like this?"
"I don't care!" Wei Lai declared. "You have to teach me!"
"Go find the Hairdryer Coach!"
"He told me to find you!"
"Huh?"
"That's right!"
The Hairdryer Coach had never said any such thing, but Wei Lai was gambling that the Cool Coach wouldn't dare verify it with the Hairdryer Coach. After all, this guy looked like a mouse seeing a cat whenever he saw the Hairdryer Coach.
In the same environment, he wouldn't even dare breathe too loudly.
"I... I... You..." The Cool Coach was driven almost to madness.
He pointed at Wei Lai, stammering for a long time.
If he could, he really wanted to kick this guy away.
Finally, the Cool Coach said bitterly, "But I really don't know how to teach that!"
Seeing the other party's compromise, Wei Lai's smile instantly blossomed.
"You can teach me something else instead, and then I won't file a complaint!"
"What do you want to learn?" the Cool Coach sighed.
"Long passes!" Wei Lai fixed his eyes on him. According to Kagawa Shinji, the Cool Coach's long passing ability was second to none in the football world—unrivaled, even.
Hearing this, the Cool Coach immediately nodded. "I do have some experience with that. Follow me!"
Wei Lai eagerly tagged along.
In an empty pitch, the Cool Coach neatly placed a ball down and turned to look at Wei Lai.
"I don't know where you heard that my long passing is great, but I can tell you this—learning long passes from me is the right choice!"
The Cool Coach said with a confident expression, "Watch closely! Learn well!"
With that, he swung his arm and fiercely whipped his foot through the ball, driving it forward.
A flagstick was placed in the distance, but the Cool Coach's long pass drew an astonishing arc accompanied by fierce rotation.
Not only that, but as it neared the flagstick, it suddenly dipped sharply.
Wei Lai slowly opened his mouth.
"It's just like a rainbow!"
Wei Lai had never seen such a beautiful long pass. The high and slow long passes seen in professional football were miles behind the Cool Coach's curved delivery.
They weren't even in the same league aesthetically, let alone that sudden drop at the end!
That drop alone was enough to shatter an opposing defender's mentality.
"I want to learn! I want to learn!"
Wei Lai was instantly electrified.
If he could master this flamboyant long pass, his aura of coolness would be maxed out!
It had speed, power, curve, and pure visual appeal!
Just imagining his future self painting rainbows across the pitch made Wei Lai overwhelmingly excited.
"Come on! Give it a try!" the Cool Coach said smugly.
Wei Lai scampered over eagerly.
"What should I do?"
The Cool Coach replied, "Place the ball, and then smash it away hard!"
Wei Lai: "Huh?"
"Just like that! Place the ball and smash it away hard."
As he spoke, the guy even flicked his foot. "Just like that!"
Wei Lai: "Uh... uh?"
The Cool Coach said with dissatisfaction, "You really are an idiot. I've explained it in such detail: place the ball, and smash it away hard, just like I did!"
Wei Lai: "Are you sure that's how you do it, and why can't I understand a single word you're saying?"
The Cool Coach said impatiently, "Only an idiot wouldn't understand!"
"Fine! I'm an idiot, so if you, you bastard, don't want to get reported, you'd better take this seriously!!——"
Wei Lai couldn't help but roar!
