Chapter 34: Contribution Points

Orcs, also known as half-beasts, were the primary soldiers of the dark forces. They bred at an astonishing rate and existed in vast numbers.
In truth, however, they were rather different from the half-beasts Li Xia knew.
They were not hybrids of humans and beastfolk, but degraded humans.
To be more precise, they were closer to goblins. Most were short and preferred living in burrows. Even a farmer with a pitchfork could easily deal with one or two orcs.
But once they mounted wargs, their combat power rose by an entire tier, transforming them into foes that could not be ignored.
“Beep, beep, beep.”
Scott’s combat goggles emitted a series of sharp warning tones, immediately displaying the exact numbers on the lenses.
Twenty-two biological signatures. Ten of them were overlapping, which meant there were roughly five warg-riding orcs and twelve ordinary orcs?
As for combat power, the twelve ordinary orcs were not particularly strong, nearly all of them rating between three and four—and that was taking their shields and weapons into account.
The five warg-riders, however, had suddenly risen to between eight and thirteen. They posed a modest threat.
“Humans?” A twisted voice, as though mumbling through a mouthful of saliva, arose from the darkness. Although he had been granted the Common Tongue of the West upon entering the world, Li Xia still had to make a considerable effort to understand what the strange voice was saying.
“Not dwarves...”
The orcs gradually emerged from the darkness. In the faint light beside the stream, Li Xia finally saw what they looked like.
The first thing that struck him was how filthy they were—terribly filthy. Their skin came in various shades of gray and was covered in wart-like lumps.
They wore almost no clothing, or else wrapped rags and coarse animal hides around their waists. Short, bristling hair grew atop their heads, while some were completely bald.
Their sharp teeth protruded outward in crooked buckteeth. Their small eyes gleamed with a strange light, and their limbs looked as though they had never developed properly.
In their hands they carried crudely forged weapons such as iron axes, clubs, and spears.
One of the orcs was clearly much better equipped than the others. It rode a gray wolf the size of a young calf.
The instant the orcs stepped out of the shadows, the three men sprang away like startled rabbits and fled. Anyone who failed to run at such an excellent opportunity would have to be a fool.
The lead orc’s vicious little eyes first fixed on the three men already running far away on the opposite bank. Then it glanced at Li Xia and waved a hand, as though shooing away a moth in the deep woods.
“Kill him. Keep chasing the dwarves!”
The battle erupted without warning. Neither side had the slightest desire to exchange words.

An orc raised its weapon and had only just opened its mouth to roar like its companions when Night Silence’s spearpoint sliced soundlessly through the air.
The razor-sharp blade smashed out its teeth. Like a knife through butter, it pierced flesh, trapping the roar in the orc’s throat and reducing it to a whimper.
Li Xia withdrew the spear and put both arms into the motion. With a mournful whistle, the weapon swept an orc that had lunged from a tree trunk back through the air.
The spearhead continued smoothly from the crown of its head all the way down to its groin, spraying foul-smelling blood in every direction.
But the scent of their companion’s blood had already driven the remaining orcs’ eyes crimson. Several of the wargs drooled as they snorted and panted heavily.
Unlike the moths and spiders he had fought earlier, these orcs had undergone training. Perhaps they lacked the ability to master sophisticated battle formations, but as a simple squad, they displayed decent coordination and mutual understanding.
And he had not forgotten that three spectators still stood on the opposite bank.
Li Xia’s expression grew solemn. Holding the spear in both hands, he swept his gaze across the battlefield. Though he had just killed two orcs, the most important enemies—the warg-riders—remained unharmed.
If the battle continued like this, he would very likely be injured. Once wounded, he might draw the attention of those three men. If he killed them in retaliation, he would suffer even heavier injuries...
Perhaps the two orcs had finally breathed their last, because a notification from the Hall of Light suddenly appeared.

Contribution points? Rankings? An increased chest drop rate?
A golden glimmer seemed to flash in Li Xia’s eyes.
Then again, if he was too afraid of injury to fight for what he wanted, how would he be any different from a salted fish?
But those three men...
Through his monocle, Li Xia saw that they had already run nearly three hundred meters. Any farther and they would pass beyond the detection range of Scott’s equipment.
They knew when to leave, at least. But that still was not enough to guarantee his safety...
Li Xia twisted aside, dodging an axe sweeping horizontally toward him. At the same time, he bent low. His feet gripped the earth like screws, his front foot planting firmly while his rear foot drove against the ground.
His entire body shot forward like a spring. His shoulder slammed viciously into the orc’s chest—the most famous technique of Bajiquan, the Heart-Toppling Elbow.
The orc was sent flying as though struck in the chest by a giant hammer. A clear depression appeared in its torso, and a great quantity of blood burst from its mouth, even knocking another orc to the ground.
An opening!

“Shhhk—”
A tremendous volume of air was sucked into his lungs, and the muscles in his legs suddenly swelled.
A faint ring of air rose from beneath his feet. The thick layer of fallen leaves exploded outward, and Li Xia shot toward the direction from which he had come like a bolt of lightning.
Once he had burst through the encirclement, Li Xia forcibly twisted around. His feet plowed two furrows into the earth, and the long spear in his hands had been replaced by the TAC-50 he had only just acquired.
At such close range, he scarcely needed to aim.
“Boom!”
A muffled gunshot rang out. A blossom of blood suddenly erupted from an orc’s chest, and it crumpled to the ground. Li Xia remained unmoved, cycling the bolt with astonishing speed.
The golden brass casing had only just flown into the air when another boom followed, immediately succeeded by a second casing.
Five shots rang out in rapid succession. Five orcs were either wounded or dead, and one of the warg-riders had even had its arm shattered.
Li Xia finally understood why so many people were enthusiastic about firearms.
They were simply too useful.
Their only drawback was that, under the Hall’s control, ammunition was extraordinarily expensive.
If he had enough points, he might even have been able to wipe out these orcs with a Void Magazine.
Unfortunately, the points awarded to him by the Transcendent Hall could not be used in the Hall of Light—not yet, at least.
Seeing his subordinates suffer heavy casualties, the lead orc nearly went mad. It yanked on the warg’s reins, raised an arm, and shouted a string of bizarre syllables.
The remaining orcs immediately scattered. Some removed their bows and arrows before climbing onto tree trunks or boulders.
Others raised small shields in front of themselves and advanced slowly, while several wargs leaped into the shadows.
Only then did the difference between an army and a mere gang begin to reveal itself.
Li Xia slowly exhaled the last of his breath, and the long spear Night Silence appeared in his hands.
The real battle was only beginning.
Come on, contribution points!
