Chapter 2: The Private Tutor (Please Continue Reading)
Perhaps it was because he often did good deeds that the goddess of fate finally lifted her skirt for the poor apprentice mage.
The job advertisement in the newspaper appeared like the last ray of hope to save Ron’s life.
However, the boy was somewhat anxious.
Because, having done many good deeds, he knew well how many scammers there were in the capital, selling shoddy goods as the best.
Thinking of this, Ron quickened his pace with a heavy heart.
To prevent such a generous employer from being cheated by competitors, he had to hurry to apply!
As dusk approached, the golden-haired youth finally arrived at the address listed in the job posting—a small courtyard on Iris Street.
“Hello, I’m here to apply for the private tutor position.”
Looking toward the guard at the gate, Ron offered a perfect smile.
With such a generous salary, he couldn’t afford to be careless.
“You’re late. The recruitment is already full,” the guard said coldly, causing Ron to freeze in place.
He hadn’t expected to face such a setback at the very first step of his job search.
Only a few hours had passed since today’s Western District Evening News was published.
How could the recruitment be full already?
The scenes before his eyes gave Ron a clearer understanding of the kingdom’s corruption and darkness.
He never thought that even a mere private tutor position could be as fiercely contested as a municipal post.
The darkness was truly suffocating!
A gentle breeze stirred the fallen leaves in the courtyard, brushing against the side of the boy’s face.
It seemed to be breaking down his resilient moral bottom line in this subtle way.
Without hesitation, Ron made a nimble decision that went against the holy light.
He would bribe the guard using dark means!
Just then, a gentle yet rational voice suddenly reached the boy’s ears.
“Is there a new visitor?”
Following the sound, Ron saw a tall girl.
Her chestnut hair was pinned up, and her delicate face bore a faint smile, her graceful features illuminated by the silver moonlight.
The girl’s eyes sparkled as if she had spotted a treasure, and she quickly stepped up to Ron.
She examined the boy—hair like golden thread, a straight nose, soft lips, and porcelain-like skin—and softly asked,
“You’re here to apply as a tutor, right? I just heard about it~”
“Uh, yes,” Ron nodded slightly, trying to appear like an experienced tutor.
“Would you like to come in and talk?”
Weren’t you already full?
Ron was stunned inside but, sensing the intense look the girl gave him, he suddenly seemed to understand.
The private tutor position was far more complicated than it appeared.
As a righteous paladin of the holy light who relied on his own abilities, Ron despised backdoor dealings the most!
—
The magical crystal chandelier cast a soft, misty light like drifting white silk, gently filling the entire living room.
After some conversation, Ron learned that the girl’s name was Talia Ansesta, daughter of a wealthy merchant in the capital, striving to integrate into the upper echelons of Orlan’s society.
She graduated from the Enlightenment Academy and was a devout follower of the God of Enlightenment.
She herself was a second-rank “Mind Scholar.”
This extraordinary path, so different from that of a mage, made Ron realize a serious problem.
‘Wait, the exalted path of the God of Enlightenment doesn’t align with that of a mage, so why hire a tutor proficient in holy light magic?’
This was different from what Ron had imagined. When he first met Talia, he thought she needed extra lessons.
He had even planned out the story of how he, once underestimated, would ultimately prove everyone wrong, win the favor of a wealthy lady, and reach the pinnacle of life.
“Mr. Ron, you’re a bit too nervous,” Talia said politely with a slight smile, looking at the handsome youth.
“I’m hiring a tutor mainly to teach my father.”
“Of course, my father is willing to listen to me, and to reassure me, he swore he would join the kingdom’s Holy Order of Paladins.”
Hiring a tutor for your father?
Ron was momentarily stunned, awkward yet polite as he smiled and sincerely remarked,
“Uh, your father is quite filial…”
As soon as he spoke, the atmosphere in the living room abruptly fell into silence.
To be honest, Ron’s difficulty finding work was not without reason.
—
But unlike before, this employer’s generosity was almost unbelievable to the boy.
Talia’s elegant smile stiffened for a moment, but she maintained basic courtesy.
“Mr. Ron, you’re quite amusing. Now, let’s talk about serious matters.”
“Hmm… I can sense your high magical talent, so I’m willing to give you a chance.”
Talia first acknowledged the boy’s professional level, then continued,
“My requirement is simple: teach my father a spell. That is the prerequisite for joining the Holy Order of Paladins.”
Teach a spell? Are you serious!?
Glancing at the panel of the healing spell he had mastered to perfection, recalling the bitter failures of three months searching for a job, Ron’s expression suddenly turned strange.
If it were just teaching theoretical knowledge to improve grades, he was 100% confident.
But to teach spells and apply for the Holy Paladin Order? He truly feared the interviewers might beat Talia’s father with sticks.
Thinking this over, Ron felt he had to be honest.
“Miss Talia, what are the conditions? I’m afraid I haven’t mastered the required spell.”
“It’s simple—a first-rank magic sword technique,” Talia said seriously. “If you haven’t mastered it, don’t worry. I will provide you with a corresponding canned spell model.”
A free canned spell model!?
Hiss… what a good person…
Hearing such lavish generosity, Ron secretly clicked his tongue and quietly pushed his conscience back down.
In the Orlan Kingdom, knowledge was strictly controlled; some rare knowledge was even treated as a form of high currency.
Canned spell models were disposable knowledge containers produced by the Gold Reserve, which not only mitigated the risk of unauthorized dissemination but were also quite expensive.
With this in mind, Ron’s young face grew serious.
Joining the kingdom’s Holy Order of Paladins—what a magnificent dream!
At this moment, Ron could imagine the torment in Talia’s father’s heart.
To avoid worrying his daughter, to become her pride, the untalented old man kept challenging himself over and over.
It was a clash between reality and dreams, a roar of failure and unwillingness.
Now, the battered Mr. Ansesta needed an excellent tutor to illuminate the dark path ahead with holy light!
“Not only one hundred gold lions a month, but also the chance to travel to the frontier, and even expensive canned knowledge provided…”
Miss Talia, rest assured—I will definitely teach our father!!!
